As a Norwegian producer, we supply some of the lowest emissions intensity oil and gas to the Norwegian industrial complex. Our large infrastructure position provides the scale necessary to employ measures to reduce emissions on a cost‑effective basis and facilitates lower‑cost subsea tie‑backs, we are committed to leading the energy transition by integrating sustainable operations that minimize environmental impact while maintaining industrial efficiency. Our Environmental & Sustainability initiatives are built on four key pillars:
CO₂ Reduction & Carbon Capture (CCS)
- As part of Norway’s ambitious climate goals, Mongstad is at the forefront of carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology.
- Through the Norwegian Full-Scale CCS Project, we are developing infrastructure to capture and permanently store CO₂ emissions from refinery operations.
- Our Test Centre for CO₂ Capture (TCM) serves as a global hub for advancing CCS technology, enabling large-scale deployment to reduce industrial carbon footprints.
- We continuously optimize energy efficiency and fuel switching to lower CO₂ emissions per barrel produced.
Emissions Control (SOx, NOx, Particulates)
- We employ state-of-the-art emissions control systems to drastically reduce sulfur oxides (SOx), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and particulate matter from flue gases.
- Advanced scrubbers, selective catalytic reduction (SCR), and low-NOx burners ensure compliance with the strictest environmental regulations.
- Real-time emissions monitoring and predictive analytics help us maintain air quality standards and minimize our atmospheric impact.
Wastewater Treatment & Recycling
- Water is a critical resource, and our refinery operates a zero-discharge policy for harmful wastewater.
- Our multi-stage treatment process includes biological treatment, membrane filtration, and advanced oxidation to remove contaminants before water is reused or safely released.
- We prioritize water recycling in cooling systems and industrial processes to reduce freshwater consumption.
Circular Economy Initiatives
- Mongstad is transitioning from a linear to a circular refinery model, where waste streams are repurposed into valuable resources.
- By-products such as sulfur, slag, and residual oils are recovered and utilized in other industries (e.g., fertilizers, construction materials).
- We collaborate with partners to explore waste-to-energy solutions and biofuel feedstocks to support a low-carbon future.
